Tom CaraccioOctober 20, 2021
Your marketing funnel is the ultimate tool for your business. It's how you'll connect with potential customers, turn leads into clients, and convert them to loyal or repeat customers of your brand.

But if you're a small business owner just starting out who feels like they don't know where to start, I can help! In this post I will explain what exactly a marketing funnel is and how it works so that you can get started right away on creating one of your own.

What is a Marketing Funnel ?

A marketing funnel, or also know as sales funnel, is a term that is used in marketing to describe the path that a potential customer goes through to become a lead and then ultimately purchase your product or service.
To start with, you need to know what each of these words means: "lead", "funnel", and "campaign".

What is a lead?

A lead is someone who has expressed some interest in your product or service. This could be through targeted ads, social media marketing, referrals from other people, etc. They are usually shopping around for something similar to what you're offering and they have an idea of the price range they are willing to pay.

What is a funnel?

A funnel is the series of actions you perform to turn your leads into loyal customers. This could include things like sending them an email about sales, offering them discounts or free samples, and so on. You want to use interesting and effective marketing techniques to make sure that these potential customers know who you are and what you're about.

What is a campaign?

A marketing campaign is the full method of getting leads and converting them to customers. It's there that you can track how effective your entire funnel is and make adjustments if need be. You should always be testing out new ways or techniques to get leads and figure out what works best for you when it comes to marketing.

How does a marketing funnel work?

There are many different types of marketing funnels, but all of them have three main steps in their buying process. Here's how a marketing funnel work in a broader, simpler sense.
how to create a marketing funnel
  1. The first step is when a user enters the funnel. This is where they are almost always aware of your company because you've made an impression on them somehow, whether it be through a targeted ad or referral from another customer.
  2.
  3. The second step is when a user or potential customer turns into a lead. This is when a lead gets interested with your product or service that they give their information or make a contact to you to get to know more about what you offer.
  4.
  5. The third step in the marketing funnel is the lead converts to a client/customer who becomes loyal to your product or service. A loyal client is someone who comes back to buy more products from you, they suggest your company to their friends, they trust your marketing campaign, and so on.
  6.
  7. The fourth step of the marketing funnel is ultimately what keeps them coming back to you again and again. This is where you give them incentive for being a loyal client of yours. You can give them discounts, free products or services on occasion, possibly VIP treatment, and so on. It's important to note that the real key for this step is consistency. If you want people to keep coming back to you for more, you always have to be thinking about new ways to surprise your customers with gifts or rewards.

How to create an effective marketing funnel (with Example)

This series will take an in-depth look at how to build one step by step so that you'll have a very good understanding of what it takes to sell effective products or service. This is the approach that we use with a structure for things that just works.

Step 1: Create a Plan for Brand Awareness

Start with a high-level overview of what your funnel looks like and how it works. You should be able to detail who are you targeting to (your audience), where and how your audience will see you.

In the example below, we created a plan to give away free ebook report to our audience to showcase our work (product and service). The plan will be to post an ad on facebook to create awareness and generate leads, which then leads us to step 2.

There are several ways where you can create awareness for your business; content marketing, social media advertising, email marketing, SEO, and etc. For this example, we select facebook advertising

Step 2: Create The Funnel Steps for Lead Generation

Lead generation is the process of building potential customers. It starts with attracting them and engaging them in a way that will spark their interest and then gets them into your pipeline by giving away valuable content or offers to lure them in.

In our example, we are using the Konnected CRM to create our marketing funnel from start to closing the deal. The Konnected CRM is built for marketing funnels, and you'll see in our example how. The next thing to do now is create your funnel steps as shown in the plan.

The next important thing is creating your landing page. This is where you showcase your business. Here are some tips to create your landing page.

  1. Write out one section at a time. These sections should follow the logical order of how you want to get people from becoming visitors to leads, then to paying customers.
  2. In each section, make sure you include a main headline and then a couple of subheadlines underneath it to expand on your ideas. This is what helps with readability. The easier your page to read, the better for user to understand your message.
  3. Include a visible call-to-action for users to opt in or enter their details to get your offer.
  4. In every content, make sure you deliver the value of what your business offers. For example, instead of saying "We Sell Solar Panels at ABC Solars", you can say "Reduce Your Electricity Bill with ABC Solars".
Once they're inside, you can start your marketing funnel and campaign to close the sale. The more information you have about your lead, the better equipped you are to close the sale when it's time--which brings us to step 3!

Step 3: Nurture Your Leads

Once qualified leads enter your sales funnel, it's important not just to get someone onto an email list so you can communicate with them further down the line but also to nurture them. Nurturing involves providing them with free content so they are educated about your industry or product without being overtly salesy--this will help to build their trust in you and allow them see the value in what you have to offer.

Once people sign up for the free ebook, we run email and sms campaign to nurture the leads - all in auto pilot. This saves your time doing other important business, while your system is nurturing your leads for you.

Step 4: Conversion Funnel

The final step is where you close the sale. This requires a lot of testing to find out what works best for your business, but once you have found the right combination of free content and selling points, then it's simply a matter of getting them onto your email list so you can continue nurturing them.
